Why Do We Hold Fast to the Doctrines of Grace?
Scriptures Concerning
God's Sovereignty
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me
I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine
own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will
which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose
nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. John 6:37-39
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him:
and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And
they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and
hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. John 6:44-45
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him
the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own
sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own
sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his
voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for
they know not the voice of strangers. John 10:2-5
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As
the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life
for the sheep. John 10:14-15
Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou
make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered
them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's
name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of
my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and
they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never
perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which
gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of
my Father's hand. John 10:24-29
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that
ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. John
15:16
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are
not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore
the world hateth you. John 15:19
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said,
Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify
thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give
eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John 17:1-2
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking
bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness
of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the
Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:46-47
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word
of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
Acts 13:48
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to his purpose. For
whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image
of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover
whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called,
them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Romans 8:28-30
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. What shall
we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to
Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that
willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the
scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee
up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared
throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have
mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why
doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man,
who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him
that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over
the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto
dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power
known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to
destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the
vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he
hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? As he saith
also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her
beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place
where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be
called the children of the living God. Romans 9:13-26
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed
us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According
as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated
us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to
the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace,
wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his
grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having
made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good
pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of
the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ,
both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom
also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the
purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3-12
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in
them. Ephesians 2:8-10
Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they
would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath
not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the
things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath
revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all
things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a
man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God
knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the
spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the
things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak,
not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost
teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural
man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself
is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may
instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1st Corinthians 2:8-16
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his
prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to
the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling,
not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace,
which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now
made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath
abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher
of the Gentiles. 2nd Timothy 1:8-11
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto
the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy
scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the
seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with
power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the
dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the
faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom are ye also the called
of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be
saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus
Christ. Romans 1:1-7
Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to
the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no more of works:
otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more
grace: otherwise work is no more work. What then? Israel hath not obtained
that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the
rest were blinded (According as it is written, God hath given them
the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they
should not hear;) unto this day. Romans 11:5-8
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of
God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the
Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 1st Corinthians 12:3
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there
is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which
is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which
hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to
his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory
of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of
glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all
wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I
also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me
mightily. Colossians 1:25-29
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as
a father doth his children,That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath
called you unto his kingdom and glory. 1st Thessalonians 2:11-12
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole
spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also
will do it. 1st Thessalonians 5:23-24
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with
the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his
coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power
and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness
in them that perish; because they received not the love of the
truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them
strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be
damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in
unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you,
brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen
you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the
truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the
glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2nd Thessalonians 2:8-14
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down
from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow
of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth,
that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. James 1:17-18
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy
nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of
him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which
had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 1st Peter 2:9-10
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the
bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth
shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the
foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is
not, and yet is. Revelation 17:8
Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of
the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and
ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed
me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a
stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee
sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say
unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of
the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matthew 25:34-40
